The main objectives of this course are to give the fundamentals of modern cryptography; to present how security is defined and proven at the cryptographic level; to explain how widely-used modern cryptography algorithms and protocols work; and to demonstrate how to use them correctly and reason for their security.

Moreover, the course mainly focuses on applying popular modern cryptosystems in practical problems rather on theoretical aspects in cryptography.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the basic concepts of modern cryptography, and the fundamentals;
  • Understand the basic and the ability to use widely-used algorithms and protocols of symmetric encryption, public-key encryption, hash functions, key management, digital signatures,...;
  • Understand the basic concepts of cryptanalysis and the methods used to attack an encryption system;
  • Show how security is achieved in real-life systems;
  • Use appropriate cryptographic techniques in security engineering to solve the real-life problem at hand.
